Upward Star Center Marks Another Leap Forward for the Spartanburg-Based Youth Sports Program

Spartanburg, SC - September 22, 2014 - A state-of-the-art sports facility is coming to the Upstate. On Saturday, Sept. 27, Upwards Sports’ inaugural Upward Star Center will hold its grand opening in Spartanburg with a free public celebration. Upward Sports is the world’s largest Christian youth sports league.

Located at 9768 Warren H. Abernathy Highway, the 120,000 square-foot facility sits on 60 acres and features innovative sports and training equipment for multiple sports and activities. The opening of the Upward Star Center is another step in Upward Sports’ commitment to fully developing young athletes. Formerly only known as a nationwide recreation program, Upward Sports now offers Upward Stars, teams for athletes to compete through high school at the highest level of competition.

“Upward Sports seeks to develop young athletes on and off the field,” says Caz McCaslin, founder and president of Upward Sports. “To accomplish that, we invest in the young athletes and those who are investing in them. The Upward Star Center will serve as home base for Upward Sports to train and equip coaches and leaders, as well as a testing facility for new sport development and improvement on current technique.”

Saturday, Sept. 27 

  • 10 a.m.: Ribbon cutting begins
  • 11 a.m.: All activities begin including self-guided tour of the complex, free food, inflatables tournaments and clinics
  • 2 p.m.: Coca-Cola will be giving away four tickets to Clemson vs. Louisville football game
  • 3 p.m.: Announcement of the Upward Stars Upstate Club Scholarship winner
  • Every 15 minutes: Prizes announced (Bike Street USA bikes, Verizon accessories, Dick’s Sporting Goods gift card, Greenville Road Warrior season ticket, Cabela’s gift basket, etc.)

The Upward Star Center features six full-sized basketball courts, 12 regulation indoor volleyball courts, four batting cages, a running track, strength and conditioning area with trainers, weights and cardio machines, a speed and agility area, team rooms, players’ lounge, meeting rooms, a café and a retail shop. Local organizations, businesses and groups are encouraged to rent space within the facility to host meetings or events. Adjacent to the Upward Star Center is a Spartanburg Regional Health Services location, which will offer strength training, rehab and orthopedic services. 

Outdoors, the complex has four lighted sand volleyball courts, two lighted artificial turf and four grass fields for activities, like soccer, lacrosse and flag football. Additional fields and facilities will be developed in the future. 

In addition to advancing the work of Upward Sports, the new facility promises to be a boon to the Upstate.

“The Upward Star Center helps position Spartanburg County as a premier destination for athletic tournaments and events throughout the Southeast,” said Coleman Young, local businessman and chairman of Upward Sports’ Board of Directors. “The positive economic impact of an influx of athletes and their families could be significant.”
